April 16, 2022 (and my camera)

Julie and I are in the process of delineating areas of interest to photograph throughout Carmel. The office parks located along major highways are of great interest to me. One could say that these office parks are “Motif #1” for suburban man-made landscapes. On this day from 106th Street we went south along the east side of US 31, which is a relatively newly constructed elevated freeway. Immediately, several photographs revealed themselves. We continued down North Pennsylvania Street to Meridian Corporate Plaza, an office park that we were not familiar with. We found a perfect place to explore and photograph. Again, photographs revealed themselves. Of special interest to me was the interface of the perimeter of the office park and I465. Elements of the highway construction stood out against the buildings across the highway and the planted trees and the undergrowth that was overtaking the highways right-of-way. The Merrill Lynch building overlooking the office park’s and highway’s drainage pipes and blooming trees was perfect subject matter. On the way home we decided to scope out an area we want to explore in the future. Before me was a photograph I had to make. Adjacent to a newly constructed large pond where the City of Carmel demolished many buildings to make it possible, was a run down puddle of a retention area in the shadow of city hall. Geese have taken up residence in the puddle rather than the shiny new pond.

Upon close review of the photographs, Julie noticed that the right side of the photographs I had made were soft in focus as compared to the center of the picture. I knew that I was going to have to change cameras and I had to decide what to to do with the photographs that I had already made. Julie found an older Pansonic digital camera with Leica glass on one of our shelves. We gave it a test and everything looked good! As for the existing photographs, this is a project that is not fine print oriented, and since the photographs look great online, I decided that they are all going to stay.
